Connecting Art and Society in Braille – 20 Years of Sculpture works by Li Xuqin

Walking through the dark and narrow passageway, you will find the exhibition hall particularly bright and spacious, where you can enter into the world of touch and experience the significance of light.

It is the first real sculpture exhibition in the Shanghai Baoshan International Folk Arts Exposition since its founding. Li Xiuqin, as an artist, has used her experience of nearly going blind to experience the dependence between the blind and the Braille. For the past 20 years, her creation has always focused on this subject, which has also shown her great perseverance. She has brought the essence of life to the art and realized the interaction and the close relation between the art and the society.

The “dots” of the Braille are kind of language for the blind, through which the blind can be connected with the society; while they are a kind of symbol for the ordinary. The artist has made these concave-convex dots represent the texture of sculptures through her creation and thus realized their visual expression. When you touch these amplified concave-convex, you will experience another totally different sculpture language through your fingertips.
