China on Chris Rzonca photographs
Already on July 31 at the Museum of Asia and the Pacific will begin an exhibition of photographs by Chris Rzonca – “MISTY ROADS. China in the early eighties”, presenting a collection of photographs from the years 1980 to 1981.
Museum cordially invites to the opening of the exhibition on Thursday, July 31 at 6 PM, in the new headquarters of the Museum at 24 Solec Street, Warsaw.
Photographs show China in the early eighties of XX century, the time of transition from ultracommunism of the Cultural Revolution to “Chinese varieties of capitalism”, in an intimate way, inquisitive, with a degree of sentiment and reflection. This face of China disappeared along with an aggressive modernization of the country in recent decades. Photographs show the poor, but also captivating people who do not know yet consumerism and melancholic landscapes of cities and villages still intact commercialization and excessive proliferation, so characteristic of present-day China. There are no private car or commercials there, people lead a modest existence in homes belonging to their workplaces. Thgoigh the eyes of photographer, we can see such China, which no longer exists.
Chris Rzonca was a student of photographer Luis Kipnis. He had numerous exhibitions in the U.S., including Seton Hall University, South Orange, New Jersey (1982) and 4th Street Gallery in New York (1983). His works are in private collections in the U.S. and Poland. From September 1980 to July 1981 as a student of the history of Seton Hall University in New Jersey, he was in China studying the language and culture. After graduation he taught history and culture of China at New York University. Again he traveled to China with students in 1992-2006, in cooperation with the Nanjing University. Currently He still teaches at New York University.
