China announces new rail line between Beijing and Moscow
Beijing has announced that China is investing 1.5 trillion yuan ($240 billion) to build a high-speed rail, linking The Chinese capital to Moscow, that will cut the journey time from six days on the Trans-Siberian to two.
The announcement was made on the government account on Chinese Twitter-like microblog, Sina Weibo, on Wednesday.
The rail line will be over 7,000km long, which is three times longer than the world’s current longest high-speed line, from Beijing to the southern city of Guangzhou.
This Eurasia project was introduced last October during Premier Li Keqiang’s visit to Moscow. Beijing expressed interest in building a high-speed rail link between the Russian capital and Kazan in the oil-rich Tatarstan region.
At present, trains between the two capitals run along the Trans-Siberian railway that links Moscow and Vladivostok, before switching to a branch line heading south through the Mongolian capital Ulan Bator.
